The Aquatec 550 Series is a medium-duty booster pump suitable for applications such as drawing water from a holding tank or shallow water source and pressurizing household plumbing. It can also be used to move water from one location to another over distance or uphill.
A booster pump should be installed near the water source. The maximum intake-side draw is 11 feet of lift. De-rate this capacity by approximately 1 foot for every 1,000 feet of elevation above sea level.
Backwoods recommends installing a foot valve on the intake pipe when drawing water up from a source. This helps keep the intake line primed.
An optimum configuration is to gravity-feed water from an elevated holding tank or cistern into the pump intake, allowing the pump to supply a household pressure tank and plumbing system.
This model features:

1/2" barbed intake and outlet port fittings are included. These fittings are ideal for connecting flexible hose, which can help absorb pump vibration.

The built-in pressure switch is not adjustable. Backwoods also offers an external Square D pressure switch that can be used instead, allowing the pump to operate at lower, adjustable pressure settings for reduced power consumption.
The Aquatec 550 is a higher-volume booster pump capable of delivering:
5.6 gallons per minute at no head/pressure
Maximum pressure of 70 PSI, equivalent to approximately 161 feet of lift
2.9 gallons per minute at 70 PSI
At approximately half power, the pump can run for extended periods of at least a couple of hours without significant heat concerns. However, operation at pressures above approximately 15 PSI should generally be limited to runs of about 20 minutes at a time to help prevent overheating.
This may be a consideration when using very large pressure tanks that require long fill times. The issue can generally be avoided by using a medium-sized pressure tank that can be fully charged in 10 minutes or less.

At 70 PSI: up to 2.10 amps
Although the pump is now fortified to IP65, components within the diaphragm pump head will wear over time. These parts are field-serviceable.
Backwoods stocks the most commonly needed replacement components, including:
Lower Housing Assembly, which includes the diaphragm and “wobble” bearing
Valve Housing Assembly, which contains the valve manifold
Typical service life for these components is approximately 2 to 5 years, depending on use and operating conditions.
A gradual reduction in GPM output may indicate wear in the diaphragm or valves.
